Description:

A Greener Hawick is a newly formed group of concerned people who want to increase awareness in the town of the twin problems of climate change and peak oil, which together present the challenge of the time. The solution to these challenges is to move towards a low carbon and sustainable future in whatever ways seem most appropriate to the local community.

Please contact us if you would like to take part in our meetings, held regularly at Damascus Drum, Silver Street, Hawick. All interested people are wlcome.

An increasing number of towns and villages are committing to making this transition and the process itself is known as the “transition towns movement”. The key features of this movement involve the development of local food networks, local energy provision, transport solutions and helping the local economy to be truly sustainable.

To this end the group organised The Green Heart of Hawick, an event at the Heart of Hawick over a weekend in May 2008. The event included talks and discussions, the showing of DVDs,  exhibitions and displays on what is being done locally already and how everyone can reduce their carbon emissions. Planning is already under way for follow-up events.

As well as raising awareness in the town, the event was seen as a platform from which to launch environmental projects and prepare for the possibility of Hawick's choosing to become a transition town.

This is a creative and exciting project and it is hoped many people will want to join it to make Hawick greener, not just for now, but for our children and their children.
