Hawick is looking to have a farmer's market up and running by the end of 2007. The idea is another exciting initiative which is currently being explored by the forward thinking Hawick Group. Members of the farmers' market sub-group have already been in negotiations with representatives from the National Farmer's Union and with stallholders and organisers of the successful Kelso farmers' market. Both parties have been extremely positive towards the idea of bringing a market to Hawick and are actually offering their support and advice.
Simon Findlay who is a member of the farmer's market sub-group said: "This really does have the potential to be a great thing for the town and in a sense we are looking to go back to our roots. The response we have received from both the NFU and Kelso is extremely encouraging and we are certainly looking to have the markets up and running before the end of this year."
The group met with Debbie Playfair from the NFU in August to discuss their proposals, and are looking at the new civic space at the Tower Knowe as a possible location for the market. They are also looking at the idea of placing a variety of stalls at locations along the High Street to encourage shoppers to visit other areas of the town. Stallholders at Kelso have already indicated that they would be keen to come to Hawick and it is understood that Friday is the most popular choice of day to hold the market. The initial plan is to hold the farmers' market on a monthly basis, but if it is successful the frequency could increase.
Simon Findlay added: "It is really encouraging to receive such positive support from another Border town, it is good that the towns are working together to support each other. Many people I have spoke to in Hawick think it is a great idea and feel it could be a real success."
The sub-group have also been looking at the idea of creating a Hawick real ale, while other suggestions include holding specialist cheese and wine evenings at restaurants around the town.
New members of the group are welcome.
