Friends of Hawick Library was set up in the year 2001, the aim being to promote the Library and to help preserve the Heritage of Hawick. The main objective of the Friends is to advance the education of the public about the history and heritage of Hawick by seeking to collate and store local newspapers, reference books and transactions of the Archaeological Society for the benefit of the inhabitants and visitors of the town of Hawick and its surrounding area.
To date, we have received lottery funding which enabled is to have 150 years of local newspapers put on microfiche, therefore making it easier for townspeople and visitors alike to research the past. At the moment, we are fund raising to purchase a new reader for the microfiche. The transactions of the Archaeological Society have been rebound with funding from the Common Good Fund and also other local books rebound with help from the John and Mary Elliot Trust.
The Friends to date, have held quiz nights, a murder mystery play, slide shows and talks, book sales (books the public have donated to raise funds). We are also involved in World Book Day events.
We meet once a month in the Library on a Tuesday night at 7pm and would like to hear from anyone interested in our aims.
