from her own disintegrating marriage to a

beginning, there’s a war of attrition between
Margot and Pauline, with occasional truces
to remember happy moments of shared experience and to offer barbed
compliments. A sharply observed portrait of a family in distress.

Jimmy Hayward & Steve Martino / USA 2008 / 1h26m. Contains no material
likely to offend or harm. With the voices of Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Carol Burnett,
Will Arnett, Seth Rogen.
A wonderful animated feature based
on the best-selling Dr Seuss
book, from the makers of the Ice Age
films. Horton is an imaginative elephant
who hears, with his enormous ears, a
cry for help coming from a tiny speck
of dust floating through the air.
Suspecting there may be life on that
speck, and despite a surrounding community which thinks he’s lost his
mind, Horton is determined to help. A delightful film for all the family. |

| | Film - The Savages (15) Tower Mill, Kirkstile, Hawick TD9 0AE 09 May 2008 - 09 May 2008 7.30pm
Tamara Jenkins / USA 2007 / 1h54m. Contains strong language and sex
references.
Cast: Laura Linney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Philip Bosco, Peter Friedman, David Zayas.
Lenny Savage has begun showing the
signs of approaching dementia when his
partner dies and her family turfs him out,
forcing responsibility onto his estranged
grown-up children. Subjects seldom aired
in American cinema – ageing, compromise,
death – take centre stage in director
Tamara Jenkins’ sharp, witty script, which
captures well the short-cuts to affection
and irritation that intimacy brings, and the performances, in particular from
Philip Seymour Hoffman and Oscar-nominated Laura Linney, are wonderful. |
| | Film - The Spiderwick Chronicles (PG) Tower Mill, Kirkstile, Hawick TD9 0AE 10 May 2008 - 11 May 2008 Saturday 10th at 11am and Sunday 11th at 3pm

secluded old house owned by their great,
great uncle Arthur Spiderwick. Unable to
explain the strange disappearances and
accidents that seem to be occurring, the
family blames Jared. When he, Simon, and

of the Spiderwick estate, as well as the creatures that inhabit it. |

Mike Newell / USA 2007 / 2h18m / 35mm. Contains strong sex.
Cast: Javier Bardem, Benjamin Bratt, Gina Bernard Forbes, Giovanna Mezzogiorno,
Marcela Mar.
Based on Nobel Prize-winning author
Gabriel García Márquez’ novel, this is
surely one of the world’s most romantic
stories. No sooner is recently deceased
society doctor Juvenal Urbino laid in his
coffin than riverboat magnate Florentino
Ariza appears before Dr Urbino’s widow,
Fermina Daza, with the message he’s
been waiting more than 50 years to
deliver: He vows everlasting love. Fermina throws him out, leaving him to
look back to the year 1879 when he first caught a glimpse of her. |

| | Film - An Inconvenient Truth (U) Tower Mill, Kirkstile, Hawick TD9 0AE 16 May 2008 - 16 May 2008 6pm
Davis Guggenheim / USA 2006 / 1h37m / 35mm. Contains images of ecological
disasters. Documentary.
The ‘truth’ the title refers to is the brute fact of climate change and global
warming – the onset of which (and its likely impact upon our civilisation)
becomes harder to deny with each passing year. The conscience here –
the speaker of this particular truth – is
former US Vice-President and Presidential
candidate Al Gore, whose crusade to
raise awareness of the situation forms
the focus of this impassioned, forceful
documentary. An important film that should
be seen by everyone.
This film is being shown as part of the “Green Heart of Hawick” environmental event. After the film, at
8.15pm, there will be a talk and discussion about the issues raised in the film. The event continues on
Saturday with an exhibition, displays, talks and more. |

Jon Chu / USA 2008 / 1h37m / 35mm. Contains one scene of moderate violence
and mild language.
Cast: Briana Evigan, Robert Hoffman, Adam G Sevani, Cassie Ventura, Will Kemp.
When rebellious street dancer Andie lands
at the elite Maryland School of the Arts,
she finds herself fighting to fit in while
trying to hold onto her old life. When she
joins forces with the school’s hottest
dancer, Chase, to form a crew of
classmate outcasts to compete in

between her two separate worlds. |

Juan Antonio Bayona / Mexico/Spain 2007 / 1h46m / Spanish with English subtitles. Contains strong psychological horror and disturbing injury detail.
Cast: Belén Rueda, Fernando Cayo, Roger Príncep, Mabel Rivera, Montserrat Carulla.
Laura, her husband and young son
Simon move into an abandoned
orphanage where she spent her
childhood. But Simon soon begins seeing
– and then playing with – a group of
malicious children, who may or may not
be in his imagination... A movie made
scary through atmosphere, pacing and
storytelling, rather than sudden violence,
needless gore and random shocks. Produced by Guillermo (‘Pan’s
Labyrinth’) del Toro, it bears some of his visual style and restraint, as well
as an abiding interest in the terrors of childhood. |
| | Ride-out: Mosspaul Hawick town centre 24 May 2008 12 noon

| | Film - Penelope (U) Tower Mill, Kirkstile, Hawick TD9 0AE 24 May 2008 - 25 May 2008 Saturday 24th at 11am and Sunday 25th at 3pm
Mark Palansky / UK/USA 2007 / 1h29m / 35mm. Contains one use of mild
language.
Cast: Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Catherine O’Hara, Reese Witherspoon, Peter Dinklage.
Poor Penelope. Her mother wants to
marry her off, but men aren’t so much
throwing themselves at her, as out of the
nearest window. Born to aristocratic
parents, the young Penelope is stricken
by a family curse that has left her, rather
unfortunately, sporting a pig’s snout for a
nose. Only if she weds a fellow ‘blue
blood’ can the curse be broken. A
charming family film about learning to love yourself despite your flaws. |
| | Film - Leatherheads (PG) Tower Mill, Kirkstile, Hawick TD9 0AE 24 May 2008 - 24 May 2008 7.30pm
George Clooney / USA 2007 / 1h53m. Contains mild language and comic violence.
Cast: George Clooney, Renee Zellweger, John Krasinski
George Clooney’s tribute to screwball comedies of yore - the likes of The
Philadelphia Story and His Girl Friday - is a
beautiful recreation of the era when pro
American footballers couldn’t give up their
day jobs. Jimmy Connelly’s beloved team
are broke, but hope comes in the form of
college footballer Carter Rutherford, cute
as pie and a war hero to boot. Renee
Zellweger plays the journalist dispatched
to dig behind Rutherford’s hero persona
but wreaks a little in-team fighting when both he and Connelly fall head over
heels for her. |

drug and sex references.

Boersma.
The latest film from Hollywood’s new king of comedy, Judd Apatow.
Friends Ryan and Wade are excited about
beginning high school... until they meet up
with Filkins, a psychopathic school bully.
They decide to seek out some protection
by hiring a professional bodyguard.
Unfortunately, the only one they can
afford is Drillbit Taylor, a homeless con
artist. He enrolls them in some physical
and mental training, including ‘Kung pow,
which involves a lot of grappling and pulling of hair, and ‘Mexican judo’. |
| | Film - Shine a Light (12A) Tower Mill, Kirkstile, Hawick TD9 0AE 30 May 2008 - 31 May 2008 7.30pm
Martin Scorsese / USA/UK 2008 / 2h2m / 35mm. Contains infrequent strong
language and drug references. Documentary.
Shot with an electric energy, ‘Shine a
Light’ is longtime fan Martin Scorsese’s
film of a Rolling Stones concert in a small
New York theatre. Scorsese captures a
band performing their extraordinary
repertoire with incredible spark and zest
– Jagger indulges in his idiosyncratic
bursts of go-go dancing, preening and
wailing, Keith Richards wields his
guitars like lances, and guest players
Jack White, Buddy Guy and Christina Aguilera underscore the Stones’
timelessness. |

the two have fallen in love. But how can
a beggar marry the sultan’s daughter? His only hope lies in a magic lamp
