Hawick Saxhorn Band – celebrating 170 years

Hawick Saxhorn Band traces its roots back to 1855, when a petition was presented to
the Magistrates and Town Council asking for assistance to form a brass saxhorn band. A
public meeting followed where it was unanimously agreed to go ahead with the
proposal.
Since then, Hawick Saxhorn Band has been an important part of town life, playing at the
Common Riding, on historic occasions – such as V E Day – entertaining the public and
taking part in band competitions. Throughout the years the band has been under the
baton of many talented and renowned conductors.
It has the distinction of now being the only band in Scotland to have the word ‘saxhorn’
in its name. Some of the instruments played are from the saxhorn family, developed in
the mid-19th century by Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone.
This exhibition captures the history of Hawick Saxhorn Band through photographs,
instruments, uniforms and memorabilia. The Band’s achievements, key events and
most importantly, its people, are celebrated in this fascinating display.
