Once Upon a Time in Hawick

You are warmly invited to the launch of Once Upon a Time in Hawick, a major new project by Alchemy Film & Arts exploring the identities, industries and stories of Hawick.

Taking place throughout 2020, the project interrogates the relationship between storytelling, image-making and place to weave threads between the town’s many pasts and myriad futures.

The launch of Once Upon a Time in Hawick will include a screening of a 1913 film about Peter Scott Knitwear, newly digitised from a film print held at the Scottish Borders Archive in Hawick’s Heritage Hub.

From mill-sponsored documentaries to Hawick-made newsreels, from cinematic re-enactments of the 1514 Battle of Hornshole to new work inspired by the town’s current landscapes, Once Upon a Time in Hawick includes a packed calendar of monthly film screenings, new filmmaking opportunities, discussion groups, research events, and a digital skills development programme.

Placing our town and its communities at the centre of a major year-long focus, Alchemy welcomes you to tell and re-tell your stories, and to celebrate Hawick as Scotland’s film town.
